Private transport in Fez
Fez has the largest car-free medina in the world, which is wonderful to walk and awkward to arrive into. Fes el-Bali has no vehicle access at all, so the practical question is always which gate, or bab, is closest to your riad. We plan that with you rather than leaving you to work it out with luggage at the door.

Arriving in Fez
Saïss is about 15 km out, roughly twenty five minutes to the new town. For a riad in the old medina we take you to the nearest gate, commonly Bab Boujloud, Bab Rcif or Bab Guissa depending on where you are staying, and most riads will send a porter with a cart to meet you.
What we do here
Fez is the base for the imperial cities. Volubilis, Meknes and Moulay Idriss make one very good day out, and Ifrane and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas make another. It is also the northern gateway to the desert: circuits down through Midelt and the Ziz valley to Merzouga start here as often as they start in Marrakech.

Can a car reach my riad in the Fez medina?
No, and no car can: Fes el-Bali is entirely car-free. We drop you at the nearest gate, and your riad will normally send someone with a cart for the luggage. Tell us the riad name when you book so we choose the right gate.
How far is Saïss airport from the medina?
About 15 km, so roughly twenty five minutes to the medina gates and a little less to the new town.
Is Volubilis worth a full day?
Most people combine it with Meknes and Moulay Idriss, which makes a comfortable full day out of Fez. Going privately lets you spend the time where you actually want it rather than splitting it evenly.
Can you drive us from Fez to the desert?
Yes. Fez is the northern gateway to Merzouga, down through Midelt and the Ziz valley. It is a long drive, so it is normally a three or four day circuit rather than a there-and-back trip.
